Piṅgala’s Chandaḥśāstra is the Vedic book of metre. A line of verse is only two bricks: laghu (short, one beat) and guru (long, two).
That is this game. You list every line of a given length. The board never applies a formula — it generates the set, the same way he enumerated it.
How many such lines? 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13… — the mātrāmeru. Fibonacci wrote that sequence down more than a thousand years later.
Stack the lines by how many longs they contain and the piles are Pascal’s triangle: the meru-prastāra, a mountain of numbers. Meru is the cosmic peak; the counts rise like one.
Every finished line ends short or long, so a full slope always splits in two. That split is why the counts are Fibonacci.

Same counts. Not a metaphor.
- stairs How many ways to climb n steps, one or two at a time? That number is the number of stones on this slope. Interviewers still ask it.
- sunflowers Seed spirals pack as consecutive Fibonacci numbers — 8 and 13, 21 and 34. The mātrāmeru is that sequence.
- coin flips Each pile is “exactly k longs.” That is a binomial coefficient: k heads in a handful of coins, a poll, an A/B test. Genetics textbooks draw the same mountain.
- euclid A computer finding a greatest common divisor takes the most steps on consecutive Fibonacci numbers. The slowest fraction is sitting on this slope.
- two symbols A bit is a two-way choice. Laghu / guru is a two-way choice. The machine is new; the combinatorics is not.
- a bar of music Tāla, konnakol, a 4/4 bar: you still build time from shorts and longs. Piṅgala was counting the same two bricks.
